Gil Jones - June 1953 - July 1954 - I arrived at the front gate of the 558th MP Co. in Yongson during the last week of June 1953. It was all a bit of a mystery to me. Two days earlier I had departed "I" Company of the 15th Infantry Regiment, Third Infantry Division located on the MLR in the Chorwan Valley area. At that time I was under the impression that I was bound for the Third Infantry Division Honor Guard. Despite the early confusion, I was certainly not disappointed to find that I was to be retrained as an MP and that my new home was in Yongson, a suburb of Seoul. Sometime later I learned that my transition from a frontline bunker to the luxury of the 558th MP Co. was quite typical of the experience of others. I have recorded my memories of those days with the 558th and offer them for your review as indicated below. I should make it clear at this point that I do not claim that my description of the events that occurred fifty years ago is historically accurate. I do believe, however, that my account captures the spirit of the times . While many names of those with whom I served came to me quite readily, others are pure invention because of failing memory. And a few names have been changed to protect the guilty. Under each of the topics you will find images that are representative of the period or topic.
